A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words
When you suffer injuries in a car accident, you are entitled to compensation for more than just the damage to your vehicle and the cost of your medical treatment. In fact, there are several additional categories of damages that you may be able to recover. One of the most important (and most common) categories is loss of job-related income.
Keep Track of the Days You Miss from Work
If you miss time from work because of an auto accident, it is critically important that you keep an accurate record of all of the days you were out of work due to your injuries. This starts from the moment of the accident. So, if the accident happened on the way to work and you ended up spending the day in the hospital, that’s one day. If you have to spend a couple of days resting in the hospital, that’s two more.
If you’re injuries are serious, it may be weeks – or even months – before you can return to your job. Regardless of the number of the days you miss, be sure to keep track of each and every one. If you have to use your sick leave or vacation days, you should obtain records of this from your employer’s HR department as well.
Keep Records of Lost Employment Opportunities
What if you lose more than just your regular wages or salary? For example, what if you have to turn down overtime? Or, what if you have to decline a promotion – or even new job offer – because you are unable to perform the role?
Each of these is a situation where you may be entitled to additional compensation. As the victim of personal injuries sustained in a vehicle collision, you are entitled to financial compensation for all of your losses stemming from the accident. This includes not only your lost wages, but your lost employment opportunities as well. So, if you have to turn down work because of your injuries, be sure to keep records to give to your lawyer. This may include things like:
- Emails, voicemails, or text messages from your boss
- Schedules of regular overtime opportunities
- Offer letters from prospective employers
As always, the more records you can collect, the better. When you hire a lawyer to represent you in your claim for compensation, he or she will need as much information as possible to help you win the largest possible settlement or verdict for your losses.
